Leuser Ecosystem
Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia · 3.70°, 97.60° · Deforestation
The last place on Earth where orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos share one forest is being nibbled away by palm oil and roads.
The Leuser Ecosystem covers about 2.6 million hectares of rainforest and peat swamp in northern Sumatra. It is the only remaining habitat where Sumatran orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos coexist. Palm oil plantations, road building and encroachment have eaten into its lowland edges, especially the Tripa peat swamps. Conservation groups and local patrols have slowed, but not stopped, the losses.
In the game
Leuser Ecosystem flares up as Land destroyed. The fix is a gesture: slash through the bulldozers to stop the clearing. Done right, it becomes Damage stopped 🌱. Finish all three steps of its chain in one round for a combo, or take your time in Explore mode: a place you fully restore stays green on your map for good.
