Borneo palm oil frontier
Central Kalimantan, Indonesia · -2.20°, 113.90° · Deforestation
Rainforest and peatland cleared for oil palm plantations; orangutan habitat has shrunk dramatically.
Borneo has lost a large share of its old-growth forest since the 1970s, much of it to industrial oil palm and pulpwood plantations. Draining peat swamps for plantations also releases huge amounts of carbon and makes the land prone to fires. The island is home to orangutans, pygmy elephants and thousands of plant species found nowhere else.
