Bogotá River

Soacha, Colombia · 4.58°, -74.25° · River pollution

Bogotá's sewage turns the river black before it plunges over the Tequendama Falls in clouds of foam.

The Bogotá River skirts the Colombian capital, collecting wastewater from eight million people and tanneries upstream in Villapinzón. Below the city it drops 157 m over the Tequendama Falls, where the pollution is visible as foam and the smell has emptied a historic hotel. Colombia's Council of State ordered a basin-wide clean-up in 2014; the Salitre treatment plant was expanded and a second, Canoas, is planned.
