Haiti's bare hillsides
Centre, Haiti · 19.00°, -72.30° · Deforestation
Charcoal demand has stripped Haiti's hills so thoroughly that the border with the Dominican Republic is visible from space.
Haiti has very little primary forest left; charcoal is the main cooking fuel for most households and the trade drives continued cutting. Bare slopes shed soil in every storm, deepening floods and landslides and leaving farmers with thinner land. The green Dominican side of the border contrasts starkly in satellite images, a result of different fuel use and policies over decades.
In the game
Haiti's bare hillsides flares up as Land destroyed. The fix is a gesture: slash through the bulldozers to stop the clearing. Done right, it becomes Damage stopped 🌱. Finish all three steps of its chain in one round for a combo, or take your time in Explore mode: a place you fully restore stays green on your map for good.
