Bosawás Biosphere Reserve
Jinotega, Nicaragua · 14.00°, -85.00° · Deforestation
Central America's largest protected forest is being cleared by cattle ranchers moving onto indigenous land.
Bosawás, together with neighbouring reserves in Honduras, forms the largest tract of rainforest north of the Amazon. It is legally Mayangna and Miskito indigenous territory, but settlers clearing land for cattle have pushed deep inside, and violent land conflicts have followed. Satellite analyses show the core zone lost a large share of its forest since the 2000s.
In the game
Bosawás Biosphere Reserve flares up as Land destroyed. The fix is a gesture: slash through the bulldozers to stop the clearing. Done right, it becomes Damage stopped 🌱. Finish all three steps of its chain in one round for a combo, or take your time in Explore mode: a place you fully restore stays green on your map for good.
