Evia wildfires
Northern Evia, Greece · 38.90°, 23.40° · Wildfires
A 2021 heatwave fire burned much of northern Evia's pine forest, destroying villages' resin and honey livelihoods.
During Greece's hottest heatwave in decades, fires swept northern Evia in August 2021 and burned more than 50,000 hectares, forcing evacuations by sea. The Aleppo pine forests supported resin tappers and beekeepers whose livelihoods vanished overnight. Greece and other Mediterranean countries now face longer fire seasons as summers grow hotter and drier.
