Mekong Delta
Cần Thơ, Vietnam · 9.80°, 106.30° · Wetland loss
Vietnam's rice bowl is sinking and shrinking as dams trap sediment, sand is dredged away and salt water pushes inland.
The Mekong Delta feeds tens of millions of people and produces much of Vietnam's rice and fish. Upstream dams hold back the sediment that once rebuilt it, sand mining for construction deepens the channels, and groundwater pumping makes the land subside several centimetres a year in places. Salt water now reaches far inland in the dry season, and plastic waste clogs the canals.
In the game
Mekong Delta flares up as Polluted water. The fix is a gesture: drag through the floating waste to sweep it up. Done right, it becomes Water cleaned ♻️. Finish all three steps of its chain in one round for a combo, or take your time in Explore mode: a place you fully restore stays green on your map for good.
