Chiang Mai burning season
Chiang Mai, Thailand · 18.79°, 98.98° · Air pollution
Every spring, farm and forest burning fills the valley with smoke until the city ranks among the most polluted on Earth.
From February to April, farmers across northern Thailand, Myanmar and Laos burn crop residue, much of it from maize grown for animal feed, and fires spread through dry forest. Chiang Mai, in a mountain basin, traps the haze and has repeatedly topped global rankings of the worst air for days at a time. Hospitals see spikes in respiratory illness; burning bans are hard to enforce across borders.
