Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve

Michoacán, Mexico · 19.60°, -100.25° · Deforestation

The mountain fir forests where millions of monarchs spend the winter have been thinned by illegal logging and drought.

Each autumn, monarch butterflies from across eastern North America converge on a few hectares of oyamel fir forest in central Mexico. Illegal logging inside the reserve peaked in the 2000s and was pushed back by community patrols and payments for conservation, but smaller-scale cutting, pests and drought continue to degrade the forest. Monarch numbers also depend on milkweed availability along their migration route in the United States.
